Fundraising for diabetes care for kids in Palestine
Children identified as being pre-diabetic, as well as those diagnosed with both Type I and Type II diabetes, participate in specially designed prgrams organized by the Palestine Diabetes Institute in Nablus, Ramallah and Hebron where they and their family caregivers learn how to manage their diabetes treatment and care. They also get special nutritional guidelines, learn how to select healthy food and how to prepare it, and participate in physical activities, all of which contribute to better control of blood sugar levels. Children who participate not only improve their overall health profiles, but they are also able to overcome problems, like fatigue and physical weakness, that affected school work as well as daily living. Healthier children with diabetes can look forward to a productive life, relatively free of the usual complications of diabetes, such as heart disease, circulation problems, blindness and early death. In some children, good management has led to either halting the progression of diabetes or, for pre-diabetics, reversed the progression completely.
